It was five or six years ago I met Harlem based multidisciplinary artist Jamel Robinson in NYC. I don’t remember the exact location, but it must have been a gallery downtown in Chelsea or Soho. What I do remember is that I loved his positive energy and enthusiasm. We exchanged Instagram accounts and followed each others lives from a distance. Although I travel to NYC on a regular basis we never saw each other again. Until I was watching the Netflix series Russian Doll on a lazy Sunday afternoon and saw a familiar face. Shooting an Annie Leibovitz inspired artist portrait was on my photography bucketlist for a long time already, but I never followed through. So I decided that this was a sign to finally make it happen.
